Let's just say that being in the right place, at the right time is a powerful, positive factor in the careers of some people. Have you wondered if factors other than performance helped or hindered the careers of quarterbacks who were the chosen ones of past and present? I wonder. And, when I wonder, I do research. A historian who happens to be the relative of the late Eldridge Dickey, a man who could have been the first Black quarterback in the NFL, has a perspective of Dickey's story that he wants to share. He will be interviewed, April 23, 2010. Some preliminary ...
He doesn’t have a starting job. He plays in an extreme pitcher's park on a terrible lineup. So why should fantasy owners keep an eye on Jake Fox? Well, he did just hit his first home run of the season. Fox is what we in the business call a free swinger. In 82 games for the Cubs last year, Fox offered at 37.7 percent of pitches outside the strike zone (25.1 percent MLB average) and walked just 5.8 percent of the time. However, Fox is a player who was an absolute monster in the minors and could bring that type of power to the ...
If you've read my articles so far this season, you many have noticed that I'm a strong believer in the Oakland A's being a good, underestimated team. I'm thinking their good start will continue to go overlooked until they're still playing this well after 30 or 40 games. A 7-4 start is good, but with such a small sample size, what critic will be deterred by an 11-game record? The given coming into the season was that the A's had a good-to-formidable pitching staff, and a defense designed to give an extra cushion for the pitching. The pitching has been phenomenal. In ...
The Oakland Raiders were always a team that took chances on players, both in the draft and in free agency, and it worked so well for them for a very long time.  So why now have things got so bad that every time the Raiders make a move, sports journalists write it off as a failure without even proper examination? Similarly like they way they applaud everything done by Bill Belichick without hesitation? Especially in terms of the draft, the Raiders have lost their way over the last 10 years with their first-round picks. We always had our busts, like any team.  For ...
This is a thought that has persisted in my mind.  Should the Oakland Raiders swap defensive lineman Richard Seymour for Washington defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth? Sometimes ideas that make too much sense don't happen, but humor me here. Seymour has played out of place in Oakland as a defensive end in the 4-3 base defense, and sometimes moves inside to play tackle. Seymour had spent much of his career as an end in the 3-4 defense with the New England Patriots. Washington now wants to convert to the 3-4 under new coach Mike Shanahan, which has made defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth unhappy. There have been ...
The Oakland Raiders' Kirk Morrison signed his RFA tender today. This could have a lot of complications on the upcoming draft this upcoming week. First let's have an analysis on Oakland's middle linebacker, Kirk Morrison. Kirk Morrison Kirk was an outside linebacker out of San Diego State University, drafted by the Oakland Raiders with their third round selection in the 2005 NFL Draft. At 6'2" and 240 pounds, Morrison is what you might call a prototypical OLB. However, he was soon inserted into the middle linebacker position where he looks very solid at times but also struggles at times. ...
In part one of this two part series I discussed some of the NFL players that are playing this game for the love of football, rather than for money. In this part, I will be focusing on the opposite of that. What follows is a list of only some of the NFL players that are only in the game for the big payday. I'm sure I will anger some people in my own B/R community, and that's fine. It needs to be said.Begin Slideshow
In 2010, the San Diego Chargers could very well fall down the charts in the AFC West. To avoid this, they cannot continue to be a one dimensional passing team. They also have to fix the non-existing running game, and shore up that defense with a nose tackle. Denver is close to the team you saw last year. In 2009 they had it, but lost their swagger. Do they draft wide receiver Dez Bryant now that Brandon Marshall is now gone or bring in a player who could be the future of their defense? Oakland is a lost soul with Al Davis at the helm ...
There are so many questions. Who starts? Who stays? Who gets shifted in a maze? Kirk Morrison seems to keep the public informed on his Twitter page. Although Morrison has re-signed with the Oakland Raiders, some say he may be traded during the week of the NFL draft. Why? He is blamed for some of the blunders in 2009. If an increase in production is what we want, you have to admit that Morrison's data in the category "tackles" increased steadily for his third, fourth, and fifth years. In 2007 he had 96 tackles. In 2008 he had 99, and in 2009 he ...
This article is far different than any of my other articles I have written before. I tried not to include myself in any of my articles, so I apologize for doing so this time. As a Raider fan I want JaMarcus Russell to succeed because it would finally give us stability in a position that we have lacked for many years. I want him to succeed because I know if he reaches his potential he is capable of doing big things with his talent. Perhaps one of the biggest reasons I want him to succeed is because I can relate to him. ...
