Erin's Oakland Sport Picks

With the NFL Draft two weeks from this Thursday, more speculation continues to rise within the first round. Will the St. Louis Rams select Sam Bradford with the first overall pick? How will the Donovan McNabb trade impact the top 10? Up to this point, the Donovan McNabb trade has had a glaring effect on prospect Jimmy Clausen. In recent weeks, Clausen seemed to find himself jumping into the top five with the Washington Redskins. However, it is highly doubtful now with McNabb in tow that Washington selects a quarterback in the first round. Now, Clausen's stock remains unknown. The Seattle Seahawks and the ...
It's no surprise that the Raiders’ second cornerback spot is bullied by all of the Raiders' opponents. Two years ago, Chris Johnson was thrown into the line-up and was able to play very well as a counterpart to the league's best cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. Unfortunately, Johnson's game broke down last season and he was constantly picked on by opposing quarterbacks. Looking at the rest of our cornerbacks, none of them really show the Raider Nation that they can play up to par. There's Stanford Routt, who has been terrible in pass coverage. Consistently, he allows his receiver to get past him for ...
Now that Donovan McNabb is off the market, the rumor mill surrounding the Oakland Raiders has changed direction, but has picked up steam. Albert Haynesworth, Jason Campbell, Troy Smith, and Flozell Adams are just some of the names that are being thrown around as possible acquisitions of the Raiders. I am just as guilty of perpetuating this speculation as anyone else. There is no doubt that each of these men could help the Raiders, but is it realistic to suggest that they would actually wind up in Oakland? Should Al Davis even consider any of them? Of course he should. He can't leave ...
While shopping at a large grocery store, I saw a children's book titled "Dick and Jane." It reminded me of a primary reader in the early years. It also reminded me of the basic qualities that some of the senior Oakland Raiders had during their best years in the NFL. The children's book was called "Look and See, Dick and Jane." Redundant is what I believed the title to be. For many years, I thought about "looking and seeing." Are they the same? I think not. When we look, we often turn the eyes toward something. It is obvious which way we will move just by ...
The Raider Nation has been torn this off-season over the quarterback position. On one side, fans root for the former number one overall pick JaMarcus Russell. From LSU, Russell is a tremendous athlete with a cannon of an arm. However, people have criticized his work ethic, calling him lazy and accusing him of not caring about the team. He finished the 2009 season with 1287 yards, three touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a 50.0 passer rating. On the other side, fans support the journeyman Bruce Gradkowski. Gradkowski joined the Raiders after failing to meet expectations in Cleveland, St. Louis, and ...
There are multiple reports coming out that the Washington Redskins are not happy with Albert Haynesworth. Haynesworth also doesn't seem happy with the Redskins switch to the 3-4 defense. The Raiders are in need of a defensive tackle, and need to figure out how to stop the run. It wouldn't be a reach to suggest that the Raiders could go after Haynesworth; not many people thought the Raiders would go after Mcnabb. Now McNabb is with the Redskins and rumors are going around that Haynesworth was included as part of the trade, but the Eagles refused because of his giant contract. If there is one ...
Let's hope not! Although Jason Campbell is better than any quarterback currently on Oakland's depth chart, he is not the right guy for the Raiders. He just doesn't seem to possess the passion this team so desperately needs. Campbell was not very highly touted coming out of Auburn University, 25th overall in the 2005 Draft. He was even called a "reach." He became the Redskins starter after the ninth game of the his rookie season. He actually played fairly well completing 53.1% of his passes for 1,297 yards, 10 touchdowns and only six interceptions in just seven games. Not terrible numbers when you ...
Just months after being dominated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl XXXVII, it was draft time. The Raiders had just used the 31st and 32nd overall picks to draft Nnamdi Asomugha, a defensive back from California, and Tyler Brayton, a defensive end from Colorado. The rest of their picks went to selecting Teyo Johnson, Sam Williams, Doug Gabriel, Shurron Pierson, Dustin Rykert, Siddeeq Shabazz, Ryan Hoag, and Justin Fargas. From that list of names, you probably only recognize about four, most noticeably Fargas. After transferring to the University of Southern California, Fargas rushed for over 700 yards on only a ...
The AFC West should be an interesting division to watch in 2010. The defending division champ is coming off another disappointing playoff loss, while the other three teams failed to make the playoffs. This could be the year that that balance of power shifts in the AFC West, and it could also be the year that the division has a chance to field two teams in the playoffs. There has been new high profile coaches added and new high profile players added. A future Hall of Famer will no longer be in a certain backfield, and for the first time in a ...
Now that Washington has acquired Donovan McNabb from the Eagles, it all but guarantees that the 'Skins will not take Jimmy Clausen, and more likely will select a left tackle of the future in the 2010 NFL Draft. The trade of Donovan McNabb to Washington has caught the sports world by surprise, because well, ESPN was too busy gossiping about whether the Raiders would bite, and how crazy that they think Al Davis is. Washington traded a 2nd round pick in 2010 and a conditional pick in 2011 for a rental player and has thus all but ditched the development of the ...
