Erin's Oakland Sport Picks

Michael Huff has not quite lived up to the expectations of a seventh overall pick from the 2006 draft. He has played his five year career at free safety and has not been impressive. He has had his moments and made some good plays, but he isn't cutting it at the free safety position. Huff has made just seven career interceptions through his five year career, most of the time as a starter. He was replaced late in the 2008 season by Hiram Eugene who was a brief fix at the position, but the job was Huff's again in 2009.  Huff has ...
There are many questions surrounding the Oakland Raiders after their best season since 2002.Who will be the head coach? Which free agents will they lose? Who do they pick in the draft? It's easy to worry about all the uncertainties sometimes as we tend to forget that this is a business. The reality is that coaches and players come and go all of the time, but there is always someone else waiting to step up and be the next star. There are a lot of players still under contract for the Raiders, let's take a look at 10 players who need to improve ...
The Oakland Athletics are coming off their best season since their 2006 ALCS run. 81-81 is by no means a sweeping success, but considering the injury problems, regrettable trades (NL MVP candidate Carlos Gonzalez for, essentially, Michael Taylor) and bust free agent signings, a .500 campaign and second-place finish was overall positive for Bob Geren's boys. After I called for Geren's firing coming off his third season in which he once again failed to break the 76-win plateau, I concede now that the A's made the right move and kept him around. Entering his fifth season, Geren must put up wins that at ...
If a measure of stability is done using the number of head coaches since 2000, then the Oakland Raiders show up as less stable than several other teams. Here is a partial list of data for selected NFL teams:   Numbers of coaches since 2000 Steelers 2       Broncos 4       Saints 2       Seahawks 3       Chiefs 4       49ers 6       Chargers 3       Oakland 6       Cowboys 4         If stability can be measured by a smaller number of coaches from 2000 to 2010, then the most stable teams are the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New Orleans Saints; both teams have won Super Bowls recently, so there may be a relationship between the measure and the consistent performance of the team. Although the San Diego Chargers, Denver ...
First and foremost, I know I have been extremely vocal and critical of Al Davis' decisions regarding Oakland, to the point where I have nearly lost all faith in him and his wacky ways but I have come to a conclusion on the matter.. He has experience. He has 3 championship rings; it doesn't matter from what time-frame. That's impressive; it shows that he knows the game. Things have changed since the last Oakland run—but football will always be football and players will always be players. The game doesn't change, aspects and rules may differ—but it's still offense versus defense, Al Davis knows this and ...
I thought I would write an article on what could be in store for the Oakland Raiders this off-season. Before I begin, I thought I'd ruminate on a few things.  I have nothing but respect for what Tom Cable did in changing the culture during his time as head-coach, but all in all, he made too many mistakes with personnel.  Had Cable made better decisions with personnel, the Raiders could have easily finished 12-4 in 2010. I know I defended Cable, because I thought he needed a mere rebuke for the mistakes, but at the end of the day, I ...
It speaks well of a player if he can maintain his production while going from a perennial Super Bowl contender in New England to the, well, “black hole” of Oakland. It also speaks well of a player if he can be a Pro Bowler as both a 3-4 defensive end and a 4-3 defensive tackle. Richard Seymour is one of the best defensive players of his generation and a likely Hall of Famer. But while he shows no signs of slowing down, he’ll also turn 32 next season. Here’s a countdown of 10 teams that might be willing to overlook ...
There are levels of excellence and if we take a global view, we see that the Oakland Raiders stand to improve in several categories. Look at the amount of wins per division, provided by Pro Football Reference website: AFC       East North South West 14 12 10 10 11 12 8 9 7 5 6 8 4 4 6 4 36 33 30 31         NFC       East North South West 10 11 13 7 10 10 11 7 6 6 10 6 6 6 2 5 32 33 36 25 Several observations can be made. 1. The stronger divisions, according to this data are AFC East and NFC South, both had 36 total wins for all of the teams in each division. 2. The weakest division is NFC West with 25 total wins for all teams in that division. 3. Although the Oakland Raiders brag a 6-0 in one category, in this global analysis, the Raiders are ranked ...
When you think of the Oakland Raiders you think of the most monumental owner in NFL history. Al Davis has done so much for the game of football I would be doing him an injustice by trying to write down all of his accomplishments.  Al has always kept the details of his personal life on a need to know bases and he felt that most people didn't need to know.  I have more respect for Al Davis then most people have for their own family members. And in respect to Al there are things I have learned about him that I will never share. But respect doesn't mean ...
The Oakland A’s have had a pretty productive offseason so far as they try to improve on their .500 record from 2010. Of course one of the keys on improving on that record is the development of their offense. They are going to need to do better than finishing 11th in the American League in runs scored in order to pass the Texas Rangers in the AL West. Another key to the A’s’ season is getting closer Andrew Bailey healthy.   Bailey is on schedule for Opening Day Bailey missed the final month-and-a-half of the regular season last year because of an elbow ...
