For me, watching the Oakland A's in the late 2000s was particularly painful.Although Billy Beane is one of the best general managers in the game and makes do with what he has to work with, the A's have struggled. They have struggled so much that their Triple-A affiliate, the Sacramento River Cats, won four Pacific Coast League (PCL) titles in the 2000s, becoming champions in 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008. They were runner ups in 2009. Since baseball rosters like the A's are an ever-revolving door where new faces are shuffled in and out, the A's have had very few mainstays ...
During the offseason, the Oakland Raiders signed Hue Jackson to replace Tom Cable as the head coach.Last season, Oakland was perfect in their division, winning all six games, but failed to make the playoffs once again. The players and staff can feel playoff glory on the horizon and fans have been wanting to taste victory ever since the Raiders lost in the Super Bowl against Tampa Bay.Here are 10 players who could help push the Raiders over the edge and into playoff success.Begin Slideshow
A Pep Talk Why do I cheer for the Oakland Raiders? There are many reasons. One of those reasons is that I have known several of them, and they were hell-raisers on the field and kind off the field. Well, sometimes they were. The few senior Oakland Raiders I knew were smart, determined, and more than survivors; they were high achievers. The years have mellowed all of them. Having lived the prime of my life during the 60s and 70s in New York City, you can be certain that I have a strong constitution which complemented the strength of those in my circle of ...
As of right now, Jason Campbell is the only quarterback the Oakland Raiders have under contract. I've been noticing on a lot of mock drafts that people believe the Raiders should draft a QB and groom him under Campbell. Some even believe they should use their first draft pick (No. 48) on a quarterback, depending on who's available, and that if Ryan Mallett or Jake Locker is there the Raiders should take one of the two. I wouldn't mind the Raiders drafting a quarterback this year, but they definitely shouldn't use their first pick on one. In fact, they shouldn't use any ...
Ahh, the Oakland Raiders and the NFL Draft.Around this time of year is when the jokes about Oakland begins; how they'll draft a 39-year old crackpot who weighs 290 pounds to be a quarterback, or how they've began their search in the jungle for the next cheetah who can take the franchise to the next level.Whatever. Most of the jokes are terrible.Anyways, last year Al Davis and his Raiders had an excellent draft. They added key players to offense, defense and special teams. Basically, they took advantage of a very strong class.Oakland did a nice job of drafting the "physical ...
By placing the highest possible tenders (first and third-round draft choices) on tight end Zach Miller and back-up running back Michael Bush, the Oakland Raiders continue their offseason spending spree and ensure continuity from last year’s 8-8 squad. The re-signing of Richard Seymour, Stanford Routt, John Henderson and franchising Kamerion Wimbley, will shore up some key personnel positions, but the Raiders had to break the bank to do it.   Seymour’s two-year extension is worth 30 million and keeps the Pro Bowler in Oakland through 2012. Veteran run-stuffing tackle John Henderson—who missed seven games with injury—inked a two-year deal for $4 ...
Oakland Raider owner Al Davis is looking to cook up something big for the 2011-2012 season. The NFL Scouting Combine is now over and free agency should soon start, provided the C.B.A. is reached. This means that the time is coming to shop for the groceries to cook this things up for 2011-2012. The Raiders have most of their main ingredients at home as Nnamdi Asomugha is the only one out testing the market. If you want to call a bust named Robert Gallery a main ingredient, be my guest because I won't. The Raiders are now looking to add a few more necessary ingredients ...
The Oakland Raiders do not have a good history when it comes to the draft. Owner Al Davis looks for certain qualities when he's drafting, and those qualities come down to athleticism and speed. Those both are good qualities to have, but he never bothers to dig any deeper than that. As a result, Davis has a long string of draft failures to his credit. These failures consistently bring the organization down. Davis had success when he was younger, and even then, he was old, but he has become fixed in his ways as he approaches his second century of ...
Not a whole lot of insight to this posting, just thought it would be fun to post some of the A's funnier commercials from past seasons. The A's put together several commercials each year. These are the ones I was able to find on YouTube. Starting with 1981 and Billy Ball, then skipping all the way to 2005 and finishing up with the full play-list of 2010 commercials. The A's filmed their 2011 commercials in the very beginning of spring training, and they promise to be of their usual comedic quality. If you have links to any commercials that I did not include, ...
In 2007, my calculus class needed a little pep talk to explain the many applications of the subject. At the time we were talking about integral calculus. Somehow I thought about a former Oakland Raider who I remembered as a very good mathematics student at Texas Southern University. Since he is retired and so many people in 2007 did not remember his contributions to the NFL, I thought that I would design some type of sports and mathematics project to compare his contributions with those of other NFL players. Jerry Rice, now a Hall of Famer, was the focus of comparisons ...
