In the earlier years of Oakland Raiders history, far more young men were drafted. This article contains a discussion of data over a 29-year period. Also, a focus on the last 10 years is presented. One observation is that the Raiders are drafting fewer young players than they did in the past. Here is a portion of the data from 2000 to 2009. Let's just say, we are looking at the 21st century data.    2009 7     2008 5     2007 11     2006 7     2005 7     2004 8 ...
Andrew Bailey may be one of the best—and also one of the most underrated closers—in all of Major League Baseball. In the two years since taking over closing duties for the Oakland Athletics, beginning in 2009, Bailey has 51 saves with an era of 1.70, as well as two All-Star appearances.   In 2009, Bailey won the American League Rookie of the Year award after closing 26 games with an ERA of 1.84.  Bailey suffered no sophomore slump when, in 2010, he closed 25 games with an ERA of just 1.47. In late September, Bailey was shutdown to have bone chips and bone spurs removed from ...
Al Davis and his Oakland Raiders are definitely the busiest team this 2011 NFL offseason. After getting a plethora of things done in a very short time, things finally seem to be cooling down a bit now that the league year has ended and Oakland can no longer re-sign its own players. In spite of recent questions about the Raiders being answered, there's still many stones left unturned. In this article, I'll give my honest opinion on issues with the Silver and Black. This might turn into a weekly thing. Enjoy. What does Chuck Bresnahan bring to the table at defensive coordinator?Yesterday the ...
G Robert Gallery (6' 7", 325 lbs) has made it clear that he will part ways with the Oakland Raiders. Since the release of former head coach Tom Cable, Gallery has been at odds with the organization. Losing Robert Gallery, however, will not hurt the Oakland Raiders. In fact, they may actually prosper by picking up a guard in the NFL draft or through free agency. Gallery was drafted in 2004.  As the second overall pick in the NFL draft, Gallery signed a seven-year contract with the Oakland Raiders. From the start it appeared that Gallery would be a ...
Al Davis has gone against the grain of the NFL ever since he was the AFL's commissioner. In a previous article, I touched on how he escalated salaries in the AFL and forced the NFL take the AFL seriously, and eventually to merge. But at the beginning of it, they must have thought, "What is this fool doing?" Now here we are, decades later, and Davis is still going against the grain of the league. "He's lost it." "He's senile." "He needs to sell the team because he can't do it anymore." That's all you've heard people say about him ...
ADAD is an acronym that stands for several things. Let's look at ADADAD, making a creative reference to Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders who experienced a big dip in the data from 2002 to 2003. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that something needs to be fixed in the Oakland Raiders' franchise. A big dip in data occurred from 2002 to 2003. Oakland had 146 points above their opponents in 2002. In 2003, the data took a "big dip" down to -109. The distance between +146 and -109 is simply 146 added to 109 which equals 255 points. That's a large ...
I shall begin by saying that this mock draft for the Oakland Raiders likely contains elements of wishful thinking. Any Raider fan knows that the glaring weaknesses for the Raiders were pass protection, red-zone offense and a lack of interceptions. The offensive line will be overhauled this offseason. The Raiders have hired Bob Wylie and former Raider Steve Wisniewski to coach the line and install the power-blocking scheme, as opposed to the zone-blocking scheme of former coach Tom Cable. The power-blocking scheme is better suited for second-year players, left-tackle Jared Veldeer and lineman Bruce Campbell. The ineffectiveness in the red zone could be resolved with ...
The biggest competition this Spring in Athletics camp was supposed to be the battle for the fifth starter spot in the rotation. Gio Gonzalez, however, has taken center stage in his appearances this spring and created a competition with fellow rotation-mates Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson for the team's number one spot. While Trevor Cahill emerged as the team's ace last season, and Brett Anderson has been hyped as being the pitcher eventually poised to take over the team's role as the ace of the staff, Gonzalez did not spend the offseason sitting back, content in his role as the ...
As it stands right now, the Oakland Raiders are adamantly committed to quarterback Jason Campbell. According to Hue Jackson the coaching staff, Al Davis and the players are fully behind Campbell. They believe that if Jason Campbell can receive adequate protection, for once in his career, the Raiders will win. But not all of Raider Nation is sold on Jason Campbell. He is the only QB under contract in Oakland and some fans aren't happy with him being named the unquestioned starter without the slightest bit of competition. Many believe that Campbell is not the answer and the Raiders need to ...
The Oakland Raiders had their best season since losing in the Super Bowl when they finished 8-8 in 2010. While this was certainly exciting for anyone in the Raider Nation, for many, it was not the most exciting part of the season that breathed new life into a struggling team. Over the past seven years, a time I like to refer to as the "dark years," there were points when the Raiders offense reached embarrassing levels of ineptitude. This past year, the Raiders offense showed sparks of dominance. For me at least, having an offense ranked in the top ten of the NFL ...
