Don’t get me wrong—I am no movie critic and haven’t yet been given the keys to run a major-league franchise, but I can say that I am really looking forward to Moneyball.  By now, almost everyone close to the game knows that the Oakland Athletics were featured in the book Moneyball, by Michael Lewis. Moneyball shows readers how the cash-strapped A’s used advanced statistics in new ways to build a successful team comprised of unwanted or forgotten players.  For someone like me—ignorant of this world and its data before I read the book—the idea of creating a ...
It's still too early to panic at only 14 games into the regular season, but this Oakland team is underwhelming the baseball world in all facets of their game but one, and it is costing the A's in the win column. After an impressive road trip in which the team won two of their three series, they have returned to the same lackluster play that cost them their first two series of the season and lost the first two games of a four-game series against the visiting Detroit Tigers. Thursday night's opener ended in a 3-0 loss despite another shutdown ...
On a recent trip to Washington, I visited the area where the NFL owners and players were at one time negotiating to determine the outcome of the 2011 lockout. When I returned home, I had to get a connecting flight in Dallas, Texas. My flight number was 1,001. That number is divisible by 11. As I sat in the aisle seat, I looked over and saw a man reading a book that looked very interesting. I wished that I had a copy of that book. I hoped there would be some advice for me in it, and that what I would learn from the book ...
As the 2011 NFL draft approaches, the Raiders find themselves in heavy need of another solid draft similar to their 2010 class. That draft produced three solid starters with Rolando McClain, Lamarr Houston and Jared Veldheer.Potentially, that draft could produce close to six starters if you include Jacoby Ford's performance at receiver, Bruce Campbell's potential on the offensive line and Travis Goethel's opportunity to compete for a outside linebacker position. In 2011, the Raiders hope to find those same kind of results. However, without a first-round pick, it may be a bit more difficult to find, but still very possible. ...
We're into the second half of April, so it's only natural that JaMarcus Russell's name pops up in the news...and not for the greatest reason. It was at this time four years ago that the Oakland Raiders made Russell the first overall pick of the 2007 NFL Draft.Unless you've been under a rock since then, you know that he has become one of the greatest busts in NFL history, arguably the worst first-overall quarterback selection of all time. And even though it's been more than a year and a half since he was on an NFL roster, he's grabbing more headlines. We'll keep ...
It appears that for once the statement "all things happen for a reason" has some validity in regards to the Oakland Athletics. The A's attempted to buy their former radio flagship KTRB 860am, finally ending negotiations the final week of spring training. The failed bid to purchase the station briefly put regular season broadcasting in question for the Athletics, drawing criticism for A's owner Lew Wolff. Thankfully 95.7FM, The Wolf, stepped up and signed a broadcasting contract with the Oakland Athletics to become their new radio flagship for the next four years. Today, Entercom, the company that owns 95.7FM, announced ...
According to a report on ESPN.com, JaMarcus Russell is being dumped again, this time by his "life coach" John Lucas. When your life coach gives up on you, possibly because he doesn’t believe it's worth the time and effort, then you know you have been labeled a "lost cause." Russell has not shown people he is committed to improving, losing/keeping off the weight and making a comeback in the NFL. It would be a nice story; the guy is only 25 years old, after all. But it takes desire, and when a player doesn’t have it, why would teams want ...
Nnamdi Asomugha is a free agent that any NFL team can try to sign whenever business resumes for the league. It was a startling move when the Oakland Raiders decided to let the best defensive back in the NFL hit the market despite coming off his third Pro Bowl and second First Team All-Pro season in 2010.  Every team could certainly use a player of his caliber on their squad, but few will be able to afford him. Plus, the teams interested should have Super Bowl dreams because most of Asomugha's years in the NFL have been with losing teams.  What ...
The clock is ticking. The preseason schedule is set in place. The Raiderettes are getting ready. And the beat goes on as the NFL and its players negotiate under court order in Minneapolis. There are articles reporting that Al Davis' health may not be the best. Let's send him a "Get Well Soon" card to let him know we appreciate him. Some say that Davis is participating in conference calls, discussing and assisting in aspects of the mediation. Few people know exactly what is going on because the mediations are being conducted "behind closed doors" and not "behind the shield." One thing is certain: We ...
The 2011 Draft is coming up, and there are plenty of different things the Raiders could do in this year's draft. My first mock draft was all about how I would make the picks if I was running the show. Now I will run this draft as if I were Al Davis and Hue Jackson. Trying to think like Davis is not easy, but it's definitely fun.Let's take a look at this mock draft and see what I think Davis and the Raiders could end up doing.Begin Slideshow
