Bob Geren became the first managerial casualty of the 2011 Major League Baseball season when the last-place Oakland Athletics fired their manager following a dismal nine-game losing skid. He will be replaced by former Mariners and Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin. But Geren will likely not be the only Major League skipper to lose his job, as these following managers find themselves on thin ice.Begin Slideshow
This is the time of year when fans begin to feel optimistic of the upcoming season for their team. Whether a fan for the Green Bay Packers or Carolina Panthers, everyone is excited for the new season. And every fan believes their team will be a playoff team. Although the lockout has changed the typical NFL off-season, fans are still gearing up for Week 1 in September. The Oakland Raiders have added coaches like Rod Woodson and players like Stefen Wisniewski who they believe will help improve the team. But we don't know yet which players will be lost when there is a ...
The Oakland A's announced today that they have relieved Bob Geren of his managerial duties, effective immediately.Bob Melvin, former manager of the Mariners and Diamondbacks, was named interim manager for the remainder of the season. In Geren's four-plus seasons with the Athletics, he posted a record of 334-376 and a .470 winning percentage. The A's are in the midst of a season-high nine-game losing streak and sit at the bottom of the AL West with a 27-36 record, eight games behind the Texas Rangers.Melvin's first game as interim manger is tonight in Chicago when the A's take on the White Sox.Read more ...
With a nine-game losing streak pushing the A's out of the AL West race for the time being, A's GM Billy Beane made the surprising, but reasonable move to fire manager Bob Geren, who was in his fifth season as the manager. The reason I call it a surprise is that Geren and Beane have a friendship that goes far back and was likely a factor in getting Geren the job. Geren never posted a winning record with a team he inherited from Ken Macha after the A's went to the 2006 ALCS, where they were swept by Detroit, and ...
Many of us in Raider Nation are thinking positive thoughts about the Oakland Raiders. We are going to places like Home Depot to purchase supplies for our patios and decks to get ready for our tailgate parties in our backyards. While shopping for a new barbecue pit and ceiling fan, a lady by the name of Becky helped me. She didn't know she was helping a Raiders fan move forward in preparation for the 2011 season. When I finished my search for equipment it seemed like she followed me outside to the parking lot. She asked, "Have you looked at the moon. It is closer to the ...
I have tremendous faith in the receivers already on the Oakland Raiders' roster. Therefore, I don't see the need to pick up guys like Steve Smith and newly freed Plaxico Burress. That is my rule but there are always exceptions. Sidney Rice, Santonio Holmes, and Vincent Jackson are big time exceptions. Turn the page to sort it all out.Begin Slideshow
Why don't more women voice their opinions by writing articles on sports? Why don't more women in the Raider Nation attend home games to help eliminate the blackouts in Oakland? There are a decent number of young female editors who review my articles. There have been some great writers who happened to be women who have posted outstanding articles and opinions, from time to time. Lately, few women who are writers seem to have high visibility on the Oakland Raiders page? Granted, there are those who write harsh comments, but toughen up and ignore those folks and write your opinions and facts, ...
The Oakland Coliseum, excuse me, I mean Overstock.com Coliseum, is for the most part considered a pitcher's ballpark.
The measurements don't seem to indicate that pitchers have an advantage, there are plenty of other parks that are bigger as far as fence placement goes, but the huge foul territory and the wind seems to give an advantage to the guys on the mound.
With the largest foul territory in baseball, the Coliseum creates problems by taking away foul balls and turning them into outs, which is an advantage to pitchers in Oakland not given to pitchers in a lot of other parks.
The measurements ...
Every season in the NFL, certain players emerge from nowhere to become Pro Bowl players. They come from good teams and bad, big-market teams and small-market.Unfortunately, Pro Bowlers haven't been coming from the Oakland Raiders as frequently as they have in the past. Last year was the first time in a long time that a Raider player not named Shane Lechler or Nnamdi Asomugha made the Pro Bowl, when Richard Seymour and Zach Miller made the trip to Hawaii. This year, the Raiders have a lot of free agents—25 to be precise. Some of these men will be re-signed. Some will be ...
If numbers don't make a difference, then why does the NFL compile so many statistics? Numbers do make a difference. Other variables also weigh in to help measure the performance of outstanding Oakland Raiders and others, like Gale Sayers. Here is another comparison to give the fans an idea of the rich history of the Oakland Raiders; it also gives something for this generation of Oakland Raiders to chase toward, when they say they are "chasing excellence." We need more young players to be "dream chasers and catchers" in 2011. Some players have short careers. When I surveyed a class ...
