The Oakland Raiders organization has gained a reputation of releasing and hiring head coaches on the fly. In fact, since the reign of Jon "Chucky" Gruden (1998-2001), the organization has hired six head coaches. These six are: Bill Callahan, Norv Turner, Art Shell, Lane Kiffin, Tom Cable and the recently promoted Hue Jackson.Gruden had success in Oakland. Had Gruden remained head coach for one more season, he would have possibly received his Super Bowl win as an Oakland Raider instead of as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer. However, it is what it is.The Raiders seem to be in the hunt for ...
When Moneyball is released in theaters this September, the Oakland Athletics will, for once this season, be drawing attention for reasons other than clubhouse controversy, losing streaks and managerial second-guessing.The movie will hopefully serve as a reminder to A's fans of better times. Times before the current Wolff-Fisher ownership gave this franchise ties to another more famous baseball screenplay.Long before I ever started writing for Bleacher Report, I made a comparison on the A's message board of their official website, stating the similarities at the time between the Athletics' plight to flee Oakland with those of the movie Major League. This ...
You'll get no argument from me when you say Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis is an NFL icon and is partly responsible for the sport being "America's New Favorite Pastime."Davis helped make the NFL the most popular sport in America. Quite frankly, he's a living legend in all of sports. But is it time for Davis to hand over some of the control and decision-making to others? I've been with the Raiders a very, very, very long time. I go way back kids. As a youngster growing up in the Midwest back in the day, and I mean the "real ...
As any military man or woman will tell you, you need to have domination in the air to have a successful attack on any enemy. Once the air of supremacy is there, you can move in with the ground attack and basically shatter all hopes. This scenario is very similar to that of the Silver and Black attack led by head coach Hue Jackson and his squad of top-notch athletes. Two of those top-notch players are RB Darren McFadden and WR Jacoby Ford. RB Darren McFadden has been with the Oakland Raiders three years, and although he had a rough start with injuries, ...
I went to the Red Sox game against the visiting Athletics today, and it was one of the craziest games I have ever been to. It started with a bang when Adrian Gonzalez hit a home run over the Green Monster. Despite the fact it barely cleared the Monster, it was still a considerable feat considering he went opposite field. After that, however, both offenses stalled over the next few innings. But the bats turned back on when J.D. Drew singled home Carl Crawford. This wouldn't be the last time that would happen, however. The A's quickly tied the game with ...
It's a little bit rare for multiple mock drafts to have a consensus pick deep into the first round, but this year that seems to be the case for the No. 18 selection of the Oakland Athletics.Several sources have the A's targeting University of Connecticut's George Springer, a power-hitting outfielder with good speed.Springer, currently a center fielder, was originally drafted in the 48th round of the 2008 draft by the Minnesota Twins (1,437th overall) out of Avon Old Farms High School in Connecticut. He chose to attend the University of Connecticut instead, a decision that has propelled him into the ...
Last season, millions of NFL fans saw the emergence of Oakland Raiders RB Darren McFadden, WR Jacoby Ford, LB Rolando McClain, DL Tommy Kelly, DL Kamerion Wimbley, SS Mike Mitchell and QB Jason Campbell. This was just a small group of talented Silver and Black players that performed well enough to get starter positions and punish opponents in 2010. Oakland's newest roster has the talent to take the Silver and Black to a Super Bowl in 2011. How so? Well there was the historic beating of Denver 59-14, there's the perfect 6-0 record against the AFC West, and as of late is the addition of an elite coaching ...
How would you define leadership? What are the qualities of a good leader in professional football? Do the Oakland Raiders have excellent leadership at this time? We truly believe so. Our hope is in the fire and leadership ability of head coach Hue Jackson. If, in fact, the Oakland Raiders have a very talented team, then will the leadership be able to harness and utilize that talent to win more games in 2011? No one should be able to say in 2011 that quarterback Jason Campbell looks "shaky" during a game. The question that I want to raise is whether or ...
Was Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis at the "secret" owners meeting in Chicago this past week when the owners again finally conceded on some key issues regarding important salary requirements the players had been standing pat on?He may not have been there physically but he could have been a part of it via phone or video conference and helped settle some key issues for the NFL. In 2006, Al Davis stepped in and convinced the owners—who had bickered about earnings and wouldn't concede to the players who wanted and deserved more of the pie—to settle with the players and they signed a good ...
Despite being in last-place, the Oakland A's (27-30) enter Friday's action just four games behind the AL West leading Texas Rangers with all signs pointing to the A's being in the position of potential buyer  when the July 31 trading deadline arrives in less than two months. For the next six weeks, the narrative of the team will largely center on whether the lineup improves its production and consistency like the front office anticipates, and how that corresponds to the team's overall record and place in the division.Just as last year, the A's pitching staff is having to right the ship, ...
