Brandon McCarthy was just a little bit better than Doug Fister, and as a result, the A's defeated the Tigers 3-1 at the Coliseum this evening. McCarthy was fantastic over seven shutout innings, allowing only four hits and striking out 10.Fister was not much worse, going six innings and allowing only a first-inning run on five hits and two walks while striking out eight. Brian Fuentes allowed a run, but managed to get his second save of the year in the ninth. The A's offense was provided early by Jonny Gomes, who singled in Jemile Weeks to open the scoring in ...
Oakland A's slugger Yoenis Cespedes was scheduled to play in his first game Saturday, since missing four games due to a strain in his left hand. That plan did not go as the A's had expected.Cespedes was not only scratched from the lineup against the Detroit Tigers, but Cespedes was placed on the 15-day disabled list before the game began on Saturday.Cespedes felt discomfort in his injured left hand after two rounds of batting practice, forcing the scratch and the placement on the DL. The DL stint will be retroactive to May 7th, but there is currently no timetable for his return. The A's are ...
Whenever anything positive is said about Terrell Owens, it doesn't take long for members of the media to speak out against rationality. ESPN.com writer Bill Williamson can now add his name to that lengthy list. Former teammate of Owens, Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice, recently suggested that T.O. would be a good fit with the Oakland Raiders. Hard to disagree with a man often considered to be the greatest of all-time at the position. Apparently not for Bill Williamson. http://espn.go.com/blog/afcwest/post/_/id/43878/owens-to-raiders-a-bad-rice-idea "...on NFL Live on Tuesday, the ESPN analyst (Rice) said something I can’t be on board with -- Terrell Owens ...
With this type of run support, Tom Milone could win 20 games. After getting nine runs in his last start, the A's offense gave Milone 11 total runs and thumped the Detroit Tigers 11-4 at the Coliseum.Josh Reddick went 4-for-4 with two home runs and five total RBI. Brandon Inge added four RBI, including his fifth home run, a three-run blast that busted the game open. That was more than enough for Milone, who bounced back from a shaky first inning to go seven strong innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and struck out six total. The A's ...
If you were asked who had the highest batting average on the Oakland Athletics going into the game against Detroit yesterday, who would you say? Inge? Reddick? Gomes? You’d be wrong if you guessed any of those guys.Coming into last night’s game against the Tigers, Kila Ka’aihue was batting .283, the highest on the team. He was also tied for fifth in hits and fourth in doubles.Kila has been dominant in his last few outings. In fact, six of his last eight hits have been for extra bases: five doubles and a home run. Not bad for a player who ...
Nobody is perfect. However, if you have the opportunity to make $38 million dollars in an NFL career, it just seems sensible to avoid silly decisions and blunders.Darrius Heyward-Bey is making the news. Did he do it? Is he guilty? Is he troubled? If so, can somebody please talk to him?So many fans are looking forward to an outstanding year in 2012. Just to see the news and accusations about DHB are disappointing and disturbing.Over and over again, great NFL players do good things, and then some of them do silly things that get repetitive news coverage. Can the good ...
When Oakland Raiders running back Darren McFadden takes his first ever handoff from Carson Palmer, it'll be the start to a sensational season.Because McFadden suffered a Lisfranc injury in the first game after the Raiders traded for Palmer, the two haven't played together. That changes this fall, when CP3 will take the snap and give it to DMC. From there, the yards will rack up.Here is how each week will transpire for McFadden. You might say it's a bold prediction in itself that the tailback won't miss a big chunk of playing time if his foot malfunction acts up or he incurs ...
Moneyball was a decent movie, but I couldn't bring myself to ignore two of the film's major shortcomings while I was watching it.First, the movie took way too many liberties with the true story that was outlined in Michael Lewis' book. It was a little too obvious that the story had been Hollywood-ified. Second, I couldn't help but wonder if the filmmakers ever stopped to look at what's been going on in Oakland in recent seasons. Moneyball was all the rage in 2002 and in a few of the subsequent years that followed. But by the time the film was released last ...
The Vikings are staying where they belong: in Minnesota. The Twin Cities will not have to lose another team to Los Angeles, but most importantly, the NFL does not have to give up on the very large and wonderful corporate town. That also means that another team should be targeted for moving. The potential organization for L.A. should fit at least these two minimum requirements, the first being that the team will be in the same division and not have to travel cross country for intra-divisional games. Second, the NFL should try to avoid moving a team out of a city with a ...
The Philadelphia Athletics won the 1914 American League pennant. Despite being highly favored in the World Series, they were swept by the "Miracle" Boston Braves. Facing financial problems caused primarily by the formation of the "outlaw" Federal League, Athletics' owner Connie Mack refused to match the offers the new league made to many of his stars, which resulted in a very different Athletics team in 1915. Philadelphia finished last with a record of 43 wins and 109 losses. Their statistics were amazing, but it was only the beginning. The Athletics used 55 different players, 27 of whom were pitchers. The ...
