Erin's Oakland Sport Picks

Archive for March, 2013
With a myriad of needs and only one pick in the first two rounds, it's safe to say the Oakland Raiders can't solve all of their problems with the No. 3 pick in the 2013 NFL draft. That said, however, drafting Geno Smith wouldn't really solve any of them.In his latest mock draft, ESPN's Todd McShay has Oakland taking the quarterback from West Virginia with the No. 3 pick—and as part of Raider Nation, that terrifies me.Here's the thing: There isn't anyone out there who is deeming Geno Smith a future star in the NFL. A good quarterback? Maybe, but not ...
It wasn't exactly a Herschel Walker-esque fleecing, but the Cincinnati Bengals got the best of the 2011 trade they made with the Raiders that sent quarterback Carson Palmer to Oakland in exchange for a 2012 first-round pick and a 2013 second-round pick. Less than two years removed from that deal, the Palmer experiment has failed, and now, there's a chance he won't play another down in Oakland. Sources tell Yahoo! Sports' Mike Silver that Palmer isn't willing to restructure his huge contract, a "move that could lead to his outright release." Also, "the quarterback's decision, according to three sources familiar with Palmer's mindset, is based ...
The 2013 NFL draft is now less than one month away, and the Oakland Raiders are by now certainly getting a much better idea of which prospects they will be targeting.  GM Reggie McKenzie and head coach Dennis Allen have stressed that this team will be built the right way. For Raiders fans, that is a refreshing change and something to be very happy about looking ahead.  Building the right way means doing so largely through the draft, making these pending selections all the more important to the future success of this regime and franchise as a whole.  Here is ...
The Oakland Raiders are a team reportedly interested in swinging a trade for Seattle Seahawks backup quarterback Matt Flynn. That would be a lateral, if not horrible move for the franchise. This is the same Matt Flynn who lost his hold on the starting role last season before the season even kicked off—to a rookie. Regardless of that, the Raiders appear to have some interest in the backup, as reported by Jason La Canfora of CBS:Several NFL sources have identified Jacksonville as the most likely destination for Seattle backup quarterback Matt Flynn, and the Jaguars are among the teams to talk to theSeahawks about a deal. Buffalo and ...
One of the Oakland Raiders' worst-kept secrets was officially revealed this afternoon as underachieving defensive tackle Tommy Kelly was released by the club. Kelly's release leaves the club with just four high-profile players from the Al Davis era: Sebastian Janikowski, Darren McFadden, Rolando McClain and Terrelle Pryor. The team released a statement via Twitter that said in part: "The club appreciates his service, dedication and toughness."That's a very nice sentiment, but it does not quite apply to the player I watched for the better part of nine seasons. Yes, Kelly produced solid sack seasons in 2010 and 2011. The only problem with ...
The 2013 Oakland A's have some players that are likely to draw attention from fantasy baseball team owners. Position players like Yoenis Cespedes and Josh Reddick, along with pitchers like Brett Anderson, Jarrod Parker and Grant Balfour, could all be top 100 players. But there are some players that while not exactly foreign to baseball fans, might not be as regarded for their fantasy prospects. In other words, they have plenty of sleeper potential for drafts taking place this weekend. I personally have pinpointed three players who I think will be absolute steals if taken in the right spots come draft day. ...
Back in December, Matt Miller and I took a look at the Oakland Raiders' draft needs heading into the NFL's offseason, knowing there was a good possibility that free agency could (and probably would) re-shape where the holes are in the Raiders' roster. In the video above, Matt and I recalibrate our assessment of which positions and prospects we see the Raiders concentrating on in April's NFL draft.Let us know in the comments below where you agree or disagree and if there are any holes on the Raiders' roster you think we might have missed. Read more Oakland Raiders news on BleacherReport.com
Waiter! There’s nary an ounce of fat on this Porterhouse steak of a man!Everyone don’t yell “Shopped!” at once. On the contrary, this picture of the hulking behemoth that is Oakland Raiders left tackle Jared Veldheer appears to be the real deal. The stupefying image was tweeted out by Mark Ehnis, Veldheer’s strength coach, who is apparently a muscle whisperer by the looks of at least a few of his pupils. In case you were wondering, Veldheer’s physical statistics confirm that the man is as monstrously huge as he looks: 6’8”, 321 pounds.  Being that tall, of course the man is going ...
The 2013 NFL Draft will be the most important of any for GM Reggie McKenzie and this new Oakland Raiders front-office regime.  After making many of the necessary cuts and changes that were held over from previous years, it is time for them to make their mark on this franchise, and do so building it the right way.  While the idea of “reaching” for a player is sometimes overblown, the Raiders’ current situation calls for significant emphasis on avoiding the wrong candidates.   With plenty of needs to fill, depth to add and questions to address, this team cannot afford ...
The Oakland A's were doing a good job of staying healthy this spring until Tuesday.  The A's suffered two injuries with Hiroyuki Nakajima and Adam Rosales getting hurt.Nakajima jokingly downplayed his injury to the Japanese media as a cramp, but Rosales' injury got him put on the 15-day DL.  Rosales was a part of the wide-open competition for the job opening at second base and was strongly considered a lock to make the Opening Day 25-man roster because of his versatility.  Along with his versatility, Rosales was hitting .324 with three home runs during the spring. The A's were beginning to narrow down their ...
