With the Oakland Raiders’ final 53-man roster now announced, we can start to assess its quality heading into the 2013 regular season.  While the team has made significant upgrades in some spots, there are certain position groups that still have alarming questions that need to be answered. We can expect the Raiders to add at least a few players that have been cut by other teams, making this roster still subject to quite a bit of change leading up to the first game of the season.  Here are the report card grades for every position on the Oakland Raiders’ roster as it now ...
When Reggie McKenzie and Dennis Allen took over the rebuilding project that was the Oakland Raiders franchise, mass turnover was a given. In fact, the changes that had to be made have resulted in almost as much change heading into the second year of the regime as there was in the first. The hope for the Raiders is that this overhaul will start to pay dividends on the field, and sooner rather than later. Here is a look at what’s new for the Oakland Raiders heading into the 2013-14 season.Begin Slideshow
Blue, Hunter and Fingers. Hudson, Mulder and Zito. Gonzalez, Cahill and Bailey. Parker, Griffin and Straily. Who's next? The Oakland Athletics are known for bringing pitchers up through the minor leagues, and they have a group of future stars waiting for the next promotion. Prospects were analyzed based on their potential and performance, in that order. Pitchers who already have a shot in the bigs, like phenom Sonny Gray or veteran Hideki Okajima, are ineligible for consideration.   All advanced stats from FanGraphs.  Begin Slideshow
Oakland Raiders coach Dennis Allen has yet to name a starting quarterback for the team's season opener against the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 8. So Thursday night against the Seattle Seahawks was a big opportunity for Terrelle Pryor, who's fighting it out with veteran Matt Flynn for the starting quarterback position. Pryor finished the game 3-of-8 for 31 yards and an interception, also adding 48 yards on the ground on just three carries.  While Flynn continues to deal with a sore arm and has been unable to practice, Pryor had an opportunity to step up and earn the starting position with ...
The Oakland A's may have lost a heartbreaker to the Detroit Tigers on Aug. 29, but they still have much to look forward to come September. The month may just give the A's and Texas Rangers deja vu. Oakland finished the first half of the season two games ahead of Texas. Now the Rangers hold a three-game lead. Even more frightening, the Rangers are two wins away from having the best record in baseball. Still, A's fans should welcome September with open arms. Here's why.   Short-Term Momentum August might have been the team's most challenging month. It faced top-tier teams such as the Rangers, ...
The quarterback controversy in Oakland is over.  Yes, Terrelle Pryor did not look like a starter in Week 4 of the preseason against the Seattle Seahawks as he went 3-of-8 passing for just 31 yards and an interception, but his competition in Matt Flynn did not even participate due to a sore arm, per Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle.  Pryor's performance in one meaningless game has little to do with whether or not he will be named the starter. He has been the starter for quite some time—Week 4 was just a way for him to get more experience. A few days before ...
The fourth preseason game is usually the worst one for fans because the starters don't play more than a series. At best, a couple of jobs on the 53-man roster are still open going into the final preseason game, and the rest of the players are vying for a spot on the practice squad or with other teams. So it's rare when a team goes into the last exhibition game without knowing who its starting quarterback is for Week 1. Terrelle Pryor got the start on Thursday in Seattle with the chance to earn the starting job, but did he do ...
With training camp and the preseason now concluded, the Oakland Raiders are set to get underway what will be a very important year in their rebuilding process.  While plenty of additions were made on both sides of the ball, as well as on the coaching staff, it is entirely possible that this Raiders team could be in for a second straight difficult season. If they are going to surprise people around the league, as they will no doubt look to do, there are a number of questions that need to be answered in the process. Here are the 10 burning questions for the ...
With the preseason down to its final game, the Oakland Raiders gave Terrelle Pryor a chance in Seattle to make a push for the starting quarterback job. It was a game of mixed results for Pryor, as he fights an uphill battle to unseat Matt Flynn. A look at the numbers shows Pryor completing fewer than half of his passes (3-of-8 for 31 yards with a pick) but the numbers also show Pryor running three times for 48 yards.   Going into this game, it was expected that Pryor would have to prove himself rather than just survive to be the starter ...
On Thursday night, the Oakland Raiders will take on the Seattle Seahawks in each team’s final preseason game of the season. Like all preseason games, the end result will be meaningless; we don’t care about the final score. What we do care about, however, is everything that happens between the initial kickoff and the final snap. For a team like the Raiders that have been mired for so many years in irrelevance and incompetence, this final game has much bigger implications than usual. This may be the final audition for the starting quarterback role for the Silver and Black. Matt Flynn—traded, coincidentally, from ...
