After Al Davis died, the iconic owner of the Oakland Raiders left the team to his wife and son. His son, Mark, took over the day-to-day operations of the team and wisely hired a general manager to handle the football side of things. Dysfunctional for at least the past decade, the Raider Nation was promised a model franchise. General manager Reggie McKenzie was supposed to model the team after the Green Bay Packers, for whom he previously worked. After two years, we are starting to see that things haven’t changed as much as the team would have you believe—at least not in ...
On Dec. 3, the Oakland A’s traded their prized outfield prospect, Michael Choice, to the Texas Rangers, along with second baseman Chris Bostick, for Craig Gentry and Josh Lindblom. This was a move that the A’s clearly made with a win-now mentality in mind, as Choice’s potential inarguably surpasses Gentry’s current ability, while Gentry is the more experienced player. Choice, currently MLB.com's 91st-ranked prospect, was drafted in the first round of the 2010 draft. He batted .302 in 600 plate appearances at Triple-A last season. Despite Choice's potential, Gentry is the more polished player right now. Choice has shown a propensity to strike out, ...
It might be easier fixing the national budget than it is trying to figure out how to stop the Denver Broncos, even when there is little on the line. With home-field advantage throughout the playoffs at stake for Peyton Manning and friends, however, the Oakland Raiders are faced with a monumental task in their Week 17 matchup. The Broncos can wrap up the No. 1 seed in the AFC by completing a season sweep of their division rivals for the second consecutive year, while the Raiders are simply trying to get to the finish line and into the next phase of ...
The Oakland Raiders will have plenty to play for in their final game of the season. There’s the job security of coach Dennis Allen, the future of their two quarterbacks and the prospective employment of about another four dozen players on the roster. Additionally, if the Raiders can beat the Denver Broncos they’d also throw a bit of a wrench into the postseason plans of their AFC West rivals. The biggest storyline for the game from Oakland’s perspective will be Terrelle Pryor’s return to the starting lineup following a five-week absence. In many ways, it could be a make-or-break game for the ...
With only one game left on the 2013 schedule, the Oakland Raiders won’t waste any time turning the page on this disappointing season. General manager Reggie McKenzie and his scouts have already compiled the majority of their reports and will begin building for the NFL draft next May. Trying to figure out which way they’ll go with their first-round pick is anyone’s guess since the Raiders have so many holes to fill. At least they’ll have a full allotment of picks, something that’s been missing during McKenzie’s first two seasons. Here is a look at five of the players Oakland might be interested ...
Last week I gave out grades for all of the transactions made by the Oakland Athletics. This week, I'm going to power rank them. What's the difference? The grades were for all of the moves made—both big and small—for the A's roster and for the minor league rosters. I also graded predominantly based on short-term repercussions (from right now through the end of the 2014 season). This time around I will power rank with the long-term impact in mind (covering 2014 and beyond if applicable). I'll also stick to the major trades and signings. Considerations include the impact the incoming player will have long-term ...
The Oakland Raiders didn’t have much to play for in their Week 16 game against the San Diego Chargers, and it showed. From penalties to red-zone issues to dropped touchdowns, Dennis Allen’s team did a little bit of everything while suffering their seventh loss in eight games. The 26-13 final score wasn’t truly indicative of how poorly things went for the Raiders. That they still had a chance late in the fourth quarter spoke more to the Chargers’ inability to put opponents away than it did anything else. The game did serve to clear up a few issues for Oakland. Running back Darren ...
Anyone wondering what the Oakland Raiders’ intentions were for running back Darren McFadden should have a much better idea following the team’s 26-13 loss to the San Diego Chargers. In his first game back following a three-week absence due to an ankle injury, McFadden had the impact of a windbreaker in a tornado. In what is likely his final road game in a Raiders uniform, McFadden finished with a meager eight rushing yards on four carries. The soon-to-be free agent was stuffed for no gain the first time he carried the ball and was barely heard from after scoring on a ...
Not even a short trip to Southern California was enough to shake the Oakland Raiders out of their losing ways. Amid a dizzying string of penalties and missed opportunities, Dennis Allen’s team dropped its fifth straight with a 26-13 loss to the San Diego Chargers in Week 16. The Raiders had a recipe for beating the Chargers, having pulled it off earlier this season. They even got off to an early lead in the rematch before the roof caved in. Most of the damage was self-inflicted, as Oakland failed to capitalize when given the chance while San Diego pounced on enough of ...
When the Oakland Raiders signed running back Rashad Jennings in the offseason, he was the logical backup to the oft-injured Darren McFadden. Being McFadden’s backup can be a rewarding job, as former Raiders Michael Bush and Mike Goodson can attest, but expectations were low for the former member of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jennings was coming off a year in which he averaged just 2.8 yards per carry, and Oakland’s offense theoretically depended on McFadden being productive. The Raiders junked the full-time use of the zone-blocking scheme in the offseason with the hope that it would jump-start McFadden—Jennings was just free-agent filler. Except ...
