Provided he makes it through the next couple of days without a setback, running back Darren McFadden is expected to take a central role in the Oakland Raiders offense in the final two regular-season games. That would be a mistake, particularly if the team has already made up its mind to part ways with the former first-round draft pick in the offseason. Making a case to restrict arguably the most talented offensive player on the roster seems foolish, no doubt. Yet with McFadden it is a no-brainer. There are several reasons why, beginning from a production standpoint. McFadden, who has missed six games ...
The Oakland Raiders played one of their best games of the year when they beat the San Diego Chargers in October. They’ll have to do the same to have any sort of a chance when the two teams meet again in Week 16. The Raiders are in the midst of a second-half slide that has some people questioning whether coach Dennis Allen will return for a third season in 2014. Several players, including running back Darren McFadden, are also playing for new contracts, putting another intriguing spin on the game against San Diego. Oakland must balance trying to perform well in its ...
As has been the case since the days of Rich Gannon, the Oakland Raiders' quarterback situation is anything but settled. Young signal-callers Terrelle Pryor and Matt McGloin both have shown signs of potential in their opportunities this season, but neither has established himself as the long-term answer for this team. As a result, with both salary-cap flexibility and a high draft selection at their disposal this offseason, the Raiders will most certainly look to acquire a quarterback who can be just that. Here are five quarterbacks the Raiders must consider bringing in this offseason.Begin Slideshow
It isn’t exactly news that the Oakland A’s badly need a new ballpark, and on Monday, a new stadium proposal was unveiled. The details, reported by Matt Snyder of CBS Sports, are that a group in Oakland proposed a $500 million stadium to be built on the waterfront at Howard Terminal. Unfortunately, A’s owner Lew Wolff shot it down. "All I care about is getting a new home for the A's in the best possible circumstances -- and under any circumstances, Howard Terminal would be as close to impossible as anything," Wolff said. With the waterfront location effectively thrown out the window, there ...
Playing a team that just knocked off the No. 1 contender in the AFC might not be exactly what the Oakland Raiders need to snap out of their month-long drought. Having already defeated the San Diego Chargers once this season, however, should give Dennis Allen’s team a boost. The Week 16 matchup between these longtime AFC West rivals could also mark one of the final games with Darren McFadden in an Oakland uniform. The veteran running back is scheduled to be a free agent in the offseason, and general manager Reggie McKenzie is almost certain to let him walk. Equally intriguing is ...
The Oakland Raiders are 4-10. That’s not a surprise considering many expected the Raiders to be one of the worst teams in the league this season, but it’s a departure from the performance of the team over the first seven games. Just two weeks ago, head coach Dennis Allen’s job was thought to be safe. For all intents and purposes the Raiders were out of the playoffs at that time, but he had done enough with a talent-impoverished team. After allowing 93 points to the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets, Allen’s job may now be in jeopardy as it’s become ...
The old adage of "you win some, you lose some" sure rings true when it comes to the moves the Oakland Athletics have made so far this offseason. Assembling a bullpen of this caliber could be an A+ by itself. But the A's failed to fill crucial holes with big trade chips. The starting rotation is young and talented. Bartolo Colon was the lone veteran of the staff, but he became a free agent. Rather than look internally, the A's filled Colon's spot in the rotation with another free agent. The bullpen was outstanding in 2013. At times there were moments when fans ...
Prior to Week 15, Dennis Allen's job as head coach of the Oakland Raiders was reportedly going to come down to how the team fared in the final three games of the season.  NFL.com's Michael Silver has the news: While second-year Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie is likely safe for 2013, coach Dennis Allen is very much on the hot seat. Going into Sunday's game against Kansas City, a source familiar with the mindset of ownership said that the season's final few games will be crucial toward determining the coach's fate. If the Raiders are competitive and appear to be getting better, Allen likely will return. But if ...
After quarterback Rich Gannon missed most of the 2004 NFL season with a broken vertebrae in his neck, he decided to hang up his cleats for good prior to the 2005 season. The 2002 NFL MVP had been a central component of the Oakland Raiders' success in the early 2000s, leading them to the playoffs in 2000 and 2001 and to a Super Bowl appearance in the 2002 season.  Nearly eight and a half years since Gannon announced his retirement, the Raiders are still searching for their next franchise quarterback.  When rookie Matt McGloin started Nov. 17 against the Houston Texans, he became the ...
A group of business leaders and prominent political figures is backing a new proposal to build a $500 million waterfront stadium for the Oakland A's, as Phillip Matier and Andrew Ross of the San Francisco Chronicle report. The project is headed up by Clorox chairman and CEO Don Knauss, former Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream boss T. Gary Rogers and Oakland Mayor Jean Quan. The mayor in particular is highly optimistic about the proposed site, as she explained to the Chronicle: “Trust me, Oakland is hot now, and a lot of developers would love that [waterfront] site if it doesn't become a baseball stadium.” A ...
