Former Oakland Athletic Jemile Weeks recently sat down to talk about his upcoming community event, Christmas on the Boulevard, which takes place Dec. 21 in Eatonville, Fla. Afterward, he took some time to discuss being traded to the Baltimore Orioles. The A's traded Weeks and minor-league catcher David Freitas for closer Jim Johnson on Dec. 3. In Johnson, Oakland maintains a stout bullpen and efficiently replaces Grant Balfour. The Orioles meanwhile are thought to have made the move to shed Johnson's $10 million-plus contract. In talking about the trade, Weeks provided some insight into what it's like as a player—hearing the news, the ...
The Oakland Raiders are in an all-out spiral following their Week 15 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. They have a full-fledged quarterback controversy percolating and not for the right reasons. That hot seat under head coach Dennis Allen probably warmed up a little bit, too. The problem is that while Oakland continues to get some very solid play at times from individual players, the collective product is simply not very good. That was never more in abundant display than it was against the Chiefs. Here are the Raiders’ full roster report card grades from their loss to Kansas City.   All information contained ...
Matt McGloin came out of the Oakland Raiders’ Week 15 game against the Kansas City Chiefs after getting poked in the eye in the fourth quarter. That was par for the course since the undrafted rookie quarterback played like he couldn’t see much anyway. McGloin threw four interceptions, one that Kansas City's strong safety returned 47 yards for a touchdown. The former Penn State walk-on also lost a fumble when he bobbled a shotgun snap from center Stefen Wisniewski. It was the worst performance of the young quarterback’s season and left no doubt that the Raiders are in dire need of help ...
It’s getting ugly in Oakland, and not even a brief surge in the second half against Kansas City is enough to take the stink off the latest setback. Seven turnovers, another shaky performance from Matt McGloin and a terrible day by the Raiders defense added up to a 56-31 loss to the Chiefs that was every bit as lopsided as it looked. How bad was it? Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles outscored the Raiders by himself, with five touchdowns to Oakland’s four. Three of the four scores came on screen passes when the Raiders barely got a hand on him, if at ...
Billy Beane has been busy this offseason. The usually stagnant general manager made a flurry of moves during the 2013 winter meetings, leaving the Oakland A's in prime position to make another run for the AL West title in 2014. This offseason, Beane appeared intent on filling every hole on the A’s roster. Oakland badly needed an additional infielder; they brought on veteran Nick Punto. They needed a closer to replace Grant Balfour; enter Jim Johnson. In fact, despite it being only the middle of December, the A’s essentially have their 25-man roster ready to go for the season. Here is ...
Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane waited until late into the second day of Major League Baseball's 2013 Winter Meetings to finally make a move. But once he did, he struck quickly. First, he traded starting pitcher Brett Anderson to the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday for pitchers Drew Pomeranz and Chris Jensen. A day later, he surprised many by sending reliever Jerry Blevins to the Washington Nationals for minor league outfielder Billy Burns. Neither move seems to have impressed fans very much. Additionally, former Oakland A's pitcher and last season's ace Bartolo Colon officially signed with the New York Mets, and minor league catcher ...
The Oakland Raiders drew a lot of funny looks and absorbed a lot of criticism for their decision to let Terrelle Pryor quarterback one series in the Week 15 loss to the New York Jets. They also left open the door to doing it again. In the most revealing interview about the topic since it happened, Oakland offensive coordinator Greg Olson said on Thursday that playing Pryor in the first quarter was done in order to provide a spark to the running game, not because of anything starting quarterback Matt McGloin did or didn’t do. Olson also said the move would have happened ...
Even if the Oakland Raiders give Dennis Allen another year at the helm, the final three games of the 2013 season will tell us a lot about his ability to be an effective head coach. It should tell Oakland’s decision-makers something, too. If Allen can’t get the players to play for him now, there’s not much hope that he will be able to rally his teams in the future. The results so far for Allen have been mixed; the talent-poor Raiders are 4-9 after being 4-12 last year. Owner Mark Davis made it clear he wanted to see progress in 2013, but ...
The Oakland Raiders are essentially out of the AFC playoff picture, but that doesn't mean the final three games of the season don't carry some importance. Both the players and coaching staff will be heavily evaluated as the season winds down, and it starts this Sunday with some great competition in the form of the Kansas City Chiefs. Outside of a difficult day for Oakland's offensive line, the Raiders played the Chiefs pretty closely in their previous matchup in Kansas City this season and could have easily come away from that game with a win. Since then, the Chiefs' offense has taken off, ...
It may be the MLB offseason, but former Oakland Athletic Jemile Weeks is hard at work in the Orlando, Fla. community he calls home. While other players are resting comfortably, Weeks—recently traded to the Baltimore Orioles—decided to give his time to others. In conjunction with the town of Eatonville, Fla., Weeks' charity organization WeFam LLC will host "Christmas on the Boulevard." From 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. ET on Saturday December 21, residents of Eatonville and members of the surrounding communities are invited to attend Robert Hungerford Prep High School for an afternoon of activities that includes meet and greets with Weeks ...
