The Oakland Raiders certainly took a risk when they selected Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr with the 36th overall pick on Day 2 of the 2014 NFL draft, but Carr fills a critical need for the Silver and Black, making him a praiseworthy selection.
While scouts have identified numerous weaknesses in Carr's game, the prolific signal-caller, who threw for more than 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in 2013, brings some impressive attributes to the table as well, including a few that could lift Oakland out of the AFC cellar in the years to come.

The Oakland Raiders entered Day 2 of the 2014 NFL draft in a precarious position. While general manager Reggie McKenzie lucked into linebacker Khalil Mack at No. 5 overall on Day 1, his team still didn’t have a long-term solution at quarterback.
Matt McGloin was Oakland’s only hedge in case trading for quarterback Matt Schaub turned out to be a bad move. If the Raiders received the 2013 version of Schaub, the one in which he threw 14 interceptions in 10 games, they would probably be poised for their third straight season with a 4-12 record.

Reggie McKenzie had yet to commit to a quarterback long-term in his first two years as the general manager for the Oakland Raiders. Taking Carr in the second round is the highest pick the Raiders have used to acquire a quarterback since McKenzie took over.
Oakland also acquired an extra fourth-round pick by trading the 67th overall pick to the Miami Dolphins. In return the Raiders received the 81st and 116th overall picks from Miami. Now Oakland will have five picks tomorrow. This was a good trade by Reggie and the Raiders. Begin ...

They also received pick No. 116 for the 61st pick. He is 6'3" and weighs over 330 pounds. It's possible he starts in 2014.

The Oakland Raiders continued their impressive draft by bringing in one of the top quarterbacks in the class in Derek Carr.
This selection came in the second round after the squad selected elite linebacker prospect Khalil Mack at No. 5. While the squad needed to take a quarterback at some point to develop for the future, the Raiders were patient enough to wait for the one they wanted.
Fortunately, Carr appears to be exactly who the squad wanted all along, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com:

The Oakland Raiders selected Derek Carr with the 36th pick in the NFL Draft. The Raiders, under General Manager Reggie McKenzie, have struggled to find a quarterback in their first two years. The Raiders have started four quarterbacks since 2012 and three of them are no longer on the roster. Matt McGloin, the only surviving of the four, will be the third quarterback on the depth chart in 2014.
The Raiders acquired Matt Schaub this offseason, which means Carr could sit out his first year. Schaub gives the Raiders a veteran quarterback who has had success in the NFL, but he ...
