Early today it was announced that the maligned slugger, Manny Ramirez, signed a one-year minor league contract with the Oakland A's, for what will be worth $500,000 if Man-Ram sticks with the big league club. There have been some mixed sentiments about signing Manny within the Oakland clubhouse. Ramirez's former teammates, Bartolo Colon and Coco Crisp are both happy with the move. However, there has also been some negative feedback on the signing, as one player expressed concerns over Manny taking away at-bats from the younger players that will be with the team for the long term.If we were to assume that ...
Manny Ramirez might be one of the five greatest hitters of the last 20 years. In 19 seasons, he's a career .312 hitter with a .996 OPS, 555 home runs, 1831 RBI and 1544 runs scored. But he will be a resounding flop in Oakland, for some of the same reasons why he was a catastrophic failure in Tampa Bay, despite Joe Maddon filling spring training headlines with rumors of a "new, happy, Manny" and a change in attitude. At the end of the day, Manny Ramirez has become Brett Favre in the sense that he missed his exit. There was a ...
Manny Ramirez has signed with the Oakland Athletics, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. But even though it's a low-risk minor league invite with a maximum contract worth $500,000, A's fans should hate this signing. There's no arguing Oakland needs help with attendance numbers. There's no arguing Ramirez won't dramatically increase those numbers. Risk-wise, the move makes sense. Publicity-wise, the move makes sense. Entertainment-wise, it still makes sense. It doesn't mean fans need to be happy about it. There are many reasons A's fans shouldn't be too pleased with this signing at all.Begin Slideshow
It could end up being one of the worst moves in the history of sports.  Only time will tell. But for the time being, Manny Ramirez—yes the same Manny who jogs casually to balls in the outfield in the playoffs, and the same Manny who failed a performance-enhancing substance test—has come to an agreement with the Oakland Athletics, ESPN's Pedro Gomez reports.Pedro's sources say that the deal is worth about $500,000, and that Manny will find himself at spring training with the rest of the team by the end of the week.Manny had announced his retirement from the game on April ...
With the recent news that the A's have signed Manny Ramirez, I couldn't help but get a little excited. It's a classic A's deal with the contract reportedly worth no more than $500K.It reminds me of other low-risk signings the A's have made in the past few years, such as Frank Thomas and Hideki Matsui. Now, why should I be excited about the Ramirez signing? It's because he has a big name, a lot of power and a larger-than-life personality. These are all things that the A's have been sorely missing. It'll be interesting to see how the move plays out. O.co Coliseum ...
Like it or not—believe it or not—the Oakland Athletics have reportedly come to terms with free agent Manny Ramirez. According to Pedro Gomez of ESPN.com, the A’s brass have reached a deal with the embattled slugger—a deal worth roughly $500,000. The oft-beleaguered Ramirez has not played in the Major Leagues since last May, when he retired from the Tampa Bay Rays following a second failed drug test. The impending Ramirez signing adds to a flurry of transactions by the Oakland A’s, a morbidly moribund team that has been surprisingly active this offseason. The revamped and rebuilding ballclub has lobbied heavily for a new ...
The odd offseason continues in Oakland. How else does one explain a team that has seemingly gotten both older and younger in one offseason? The latest odd move? The A's have inked Manny Ramirez to a one-year, $500,000 deal. The deal is a minor-league deal and he'll still have to serve a pending 50-game suspension for his last positive performance-enhancing drug test, which he failed last spring while on the Tampa Bay Rays roster.Barring rain-outs, Manny could be "Manny" on June 2nd, 2012. Regardless of whether you love, hate or are completely neutral (I'm sure someone must be) on Manny, this deal is ...
In what may be the biggest surprise move of the MLB offseason, the Oakland A's have brought in one of the most controversial sluggers in recent memory in free agent outfielder Manny Ramirez. According to ESPN's Pedo Gomez, the Athletics have agreed to sign Ramirez to one-year, $500,000 deal. This would make Ramirez one of the lowest paid players on the team, but the addition definitely makes A's general manager Billy Beane look somewhat desperate.  Breaking News: Manny Ramirez (555 HR) agrees to 1-year, $500,000 deal w/ @Athletics, @pedrogomezESPN reports es.pn/ytM3h2— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) February 20, 2012  The A's have constantly been a building ...
Earlier this month, the Oakland Athletics swooped in out of nowhere to sign coveted free agent Yoenis Cespedes. On Monday, they again went out and got another highly publicized player by the name of Manny Ramirez. Ramirez agreed to a one-year, $500,000 contract according to ESPN's Pedro Gomez. Ramirez will still have to serve his 50-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy for the second time. He retired last season as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays when the positive test was announced, resulting in a reduction of the suspension from 100 to 50 games. Manny Ramirez, who ...
According to a report by ESPN's Pedro Gomez on SportsCenter, Manny Ramirez is going to sign with the Oakland Athletics. The embattled slugger, who is likely facing a 50-game drug suspension, retired five games into last season, but recently had a change of heart.According to Jane Lee of MLB.com, Ramirez recently worked out for the A's and will likely earn a little more than the league minimum of $480,000.After the signing of Yoenis Cespedes, A's general manager Billy Beane has shown that he's still going to put a team on the field that will compete. With the addition of Ramirez as a ...
