The Oakland Raiders and general manager Reggie McKenzie reached an agreement on a four-year contract extension announced Friday night.  Scott Bair of CSN Bay Area confirmed the news, which keeps McKenzie with the organization through the 2021 NFL draft, and he passed along comments from team owner Mark Davis: "It was time to get something done. Reggie earned it." McKenzie took over the Raiders roster in 2012 and started a painful retooling process that finally started showing signs of progress last season. Oakland went 7-9 during the 2015 campaign after going a combined 11-37 over his first three years in charge. Those down ...
The Oakland Raiders and cornerback David Amerson agreed to a four-year contract extension worth $38 million, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on July 15.  ESPN.com added that Amerson will receive $17.5 million in guarantees. However, on Tuesday, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk broke down the particulars of the deal, especially as it pertains to guaranteed money: So here’s what it means. Amerson is guaranteed to receive $5.5 million at signing, with rolling injury-only guarantees of $12 million. That’s a total of $17.5 million in generally (not actually) guaranteed money at signing. The deal itself has a maximum value of $38.38 million. But $4.5 million ...
Oakland Raiders linebacker Aldon Smith was arraigned Friday for violating his probation in an incident stemming from a prior conviction.  CSNBayArea.com reported the news Thursday. The report cites the Santa Clara County criminal case index as the source of information and also states Smith will argue a motion to suppress evidence. That legal issue stems from an August 2015 incident involving multiple charges including a DUI and hit-and-run. On Saturday, Hannah Knowles of the Bay Area News Group reported Smith's attorney, Joshua Bentley, is seeking to have the alleged violation of his probation due to driving while drunk last year dismissed, arguing that the ...
Oakland Raiders linebacker Bruce Irvin appears confident about his new team's playoff chances this upcoming season, as he sees his team breaking out in 2016. Irvin, who signed with Oakland during the offseason, said he was brought in to be a leader for a young team. The former Seattle Seahawks defender feels the Raiders are ready to take the next step, per ESPN.com's Paul Gutierrez: You have a lot of guys who are willing to listen to the older guys, so that’s the greatest thing about coming to a situation like this ... I have to say, it’s a bunch of guys ...
Oakland Raiders star Khalil Mack would routinely exceed 20 sacks if not for illegal play from opposing offensive linemen, according to his quarterback, Derek Carr. Carr told Adam Schein on Sirius XM Radio that Mack has the ability to set records (via CBS Sports' Will Brinson): 20 sacks for Khalil is easily attainable. ... He could have 30 if he just didn't get held all the time. I'm not kidding you. I go back and watch him, because me and him are close, close friends. So I go back and watch him and those things I'm not kidding you, this guy gets held more ...
There was a time, as recent as a few years ago, when if you asked NFL owners or executives if the league would ever have a team move to Las Vegas, the answer you almost always got was: "No effing way."  As the months have passed since, and as the NFL's dance with Vegas continued, people began to tell me the odds were increasing, like a thermometer reading from the fall to the spring. The percentages of the chances rose from 0 to 10, then 10 to 20, then higher. Then just recently, in a conversation with an NFL owner about the ...
The Raiders' future in Oakland has become increasingly cloudy over the past few months, and Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman fueled speculation that the franchise could relocate during an interview Tuesday. Speaking to Andy Katz on ESPN Radio's Capital Games podcast, Goodman expressed optimism that the storied squad could move to Sin City, saying, "The Raiders will come if Nevada handles this properly." "Mark Davis has assured us that Las Vegas is not getting played in a Raiders stadium deal," Goodman added, per Katz. "I know we will have a team." Goodman's comments come on the heels of a major monetary move by ...
The Oakland Raiders welcome seven rookies while the franchise pushes for league-wide respect as a playoff contender in the upcoming NFL season. The Raiders front office didn’t waste any time strengthening weak positions during free agency. General manager Reggie McKenzie and his draft-day decision-makers continued to fill needy positions through the first two rounds of the draft. The No. 14 and No. 44 overall picks, safety Karl Joseph and defensive lineman Jihad Ward, will have an immediate opportunity to earn snaps with the starting lineup. After the top two draft selections, the best-player-available approach took over in Rounds 3 and 4. Michigan ...
On Day 2 of the NFL draft, the Oakland Raiders continued to add bulk and pass-rushing components to their front seven.  The Raiders’ draft team selected Illinois defensive lineman Jihad Ward with the No. 44 overall pick and Michigan State defensive end Shilique Calhoun at No. 75. Head coach Jack Del Rio sat down with local reporters, per the team’s official website, to recap Oakland’s second- and third-round selections. He denied coming into the draft focusing specifically on defensive voids on the roster. In fairness to Del Rio’s claim, it became a shocker to see Calhoun, a productive edge-rusher, slip through the cracks ...
The Oakland Raiders decided to strike first at the safety position with the No. 14 overall pick in an effort to add the final missing link to a fiercely competitive secondary. West Virginia safety Karl Joseph doesn’t bring the glitz and glamour in comparison to previous first-round picks. Many Raiders fans hoped to land UCLA linebacker Myles Jack or Clemson defensive end Shaq Lawson, as both prospects slipped past the top 10. General manager Reggie McKenzie obviously went with the favorable choice, which also fills a roster need. Critics questioned McKenzie’s decision to select another ailing defensive back at the top of the ...
