OAKLAND, Calif. — When Seth Roberts walked to the line of scrimmage, he didn't have a clue. What was his route? What was this coverage? Oh no, was that his position coach scowling over there?
His first season at West Alabama, Roberts would inevitably screw up and phone home in a pit of frustration.
"There was too much mentally going through him," said his father, Ronnie Roberts. "His mind would go blank."
Yet here is Seth Roberts today.
There's only one minute, 55 seconds left in overtime. At the Buccaneers' 41-yard line, on 4th-and-3 from the slot, he smells blood. Roberts toasts his man ...
Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr will undergo surgery after suffering a broken fibula in Week 16 against the Indianapolis Colts, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport (via NFL.com's Max Meyer).
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Carr will be out six to eight weeks.
Carr's mother, Sheryl, provided an update on Facebook on the quarterback on Tuesday, via CSN's Scott Bair:
Update: Derek is out and doing EXCELLENT! We are very pleased as a family! Thank you for all your prayers! When Oakland decides to release a formal statement, you will hear it from them! Thank you for all your prayers and well wishes ...
This particular Oakland Raiders' win didn’t feel like a victory. Offensive lineman Donald Penn spoke to the local media after his team secured a 12-3 record, per the team's official website. He needed to restrain his outburst for giving up the one sack that knocked quarterback Derek Carr out of the game.
Penn took the injury personally, but he’s not to blame—no one deserves the blame for something that could happen on any random down. Injuries come along with a physical game filled with collisions.
With approximately 11 minutes left and up 33-14, the Raiders lined up at their own 48-yard line ...
You could read the lips of Derek Carr after he went down in a heap, his right ankle stuck and twisted under the body of 270-pound Indianapolis defensive lineman Trent Cole. One of the first things Carr said: "It's broke."
Then, Carr appeared to say, "It's bad."
Carr was helped off the field, unable to put weight on the leg, and it was obvious from Carr's reaction, and the sudden quietness of a nervous fanbase at Oakland Coliseum, that something was seriously wrong.
"We all felt it," coach Jack Del Rio told the media after the game. "I think the stadium felt it."

In the same stadium where the Oakland Raiders played their last postseason game as the AFC Champion in Super Bowl 37, they clinched a 2017 playoff berth in a 19-16 victory over the San Diego Chargers.
Kicker Sebastian Janikowski’s football life came full circle after the final buzzer. He endured that Super Bowl loss with the 2002 team. On Sunday, his leg contributed 12 points in field goals, including a 44-yarder with 2:40 left in the game that put the Silver and Black in the lead for the win.
Janikowski deserves a game ball for his long-suffering commitment and the ability to ...
For the first time since 2002, the Oakland Raiders are heading to the postseason. Their 19-16 win over the San Diego Chargers on Sunday clinched at least a wild-card berth.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network noted what made this such a special moment:
Losses by the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos in Week 14 helped Oakland move back into sole possession of first place in the AFC West with two weeks remaining.
The team celebrated the moment on its official Twitter account:
Bleacher Report and the NFL account both joined in for the celebration:
The Raiders have not made the postseason since their Super Bowl XXXVII ...
The Oakland Raiders’ Thursday night matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs jumped off to a rocky start when the team confirmed offensive guard Kelechi Osemele would miss the game due to an illness. Ironically, the ground attack produced without him, but the stars who typically contribute to fourth-quarter comebacks struggled throughout the game.
Quarterback Derek Carr never established his rhythm and labeled his performance a random poor showing during his postgame interview. In games started and finished, the Raiders signal-caller notched a career-worst in passing yards. Through the telecast, NBC announcers focused on Carr purposely protecting his pinky; an injured finger in the ...
Khalil Mack has developed into one of the NFL's premier pass-rushing forces since he was drafted in 2014, but the Oakland Raiders aren't expected to rush a contract extension once the 2016 season is over.

Thursday, Dec. 8
Citing a source with knowledge of the situation Thursday, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reported the Raiders plan to prioritize an extension for quarterback Derek Carr over Mack because the defensive end's contract has a fifth-year team option that can be exercised before May 3.

Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is putting together an MVP-caliber season on a bargain contract thanks to being a second-round draft pick in 2014, though that could change soon.

Raiders to Focus on Carr
Thursday, Dec. 8
Per Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, the Raiders are expected to work on signing Carr to a long-term extension before turning their attention to star defender Khalil Mack.
It's a logical move for the Raiders. Though the team drafted both players in 2014, Mack's contract contains a fifth-year option because Oakland selected him in the first round, and the Raiders are almost certain to exercise ...
Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw five game-winning touchdown passes during either the fourth quarter or overtime in a single season Sunday, per Elias Sports Bureau (h/t ESPN Stats & Info).
The game-winning drive started early in the fourth quarter and lasted just 40 seconds before the Raiders snagged the lead. Carr capped the drive off with a 37-yard touchdown pass to Amari Cooper to give Oakland the advantage for good.
The Raiders totaled 29 unanswered points over an 11-minute, 43-second span during Sunday's contest to earn the victory. They came back to win ...
